3 Things To Do When Buying A Homeowner's Insurance Policy

Posted on: 11 March 2022

Are you getting ready to purchase a new homeowner's insurance policy? Here are some things you should do while you're at it:

Figure out What Should be Covered

There is no "one size fits all" plan when it comes to homeowner's insurance. Some plans cover only the main structure on a property, while other plans will cover all structures on the property. Still, other policies may cover certain assets that are kept inside your house, like expensive appliances, jewelry, artwork, electronics, and even furniture.

You may even find insurance policies that include liability coverage that will financially protect you if someone gets injured on your property. It is important to sit down and figure out exactly what you want to have covered under your homeowner's insurance policy. Make a list of each item in your home that you would like covered. Document all structures, even the chicken coop, that you want to be covered. Then, you can use your list as a reference when comparing what each prospective policy does and doesn't cover.

Take Steps to Save Money

You may be able to save some money on your homeowner's insurance rates by making your property less of a risk for the insurance company. For example, having a security system installed will make your home less likely to be burglarized or become an arson victim as time goes on. This means that you will be less likely to file a claim with your insurance company. This equals savings on claims for the insurance company, and some of those perceived savings can be passed on to you.

Another way you may be able to save some money on your homeowner's insurance policy is to combine multiple types of insurance together. Depending on the types of insurance the company you're working with offers, you could possibly combine your auto, life, and homeowner's insurance to save a percentage of the total amount of your policies overall. Choosing a higher deductible might also lower your insurance rates.

Prepare to Compare

Keep tabs on all the insurance companies you consider buying your homeowner's insurance policy from so that you can refer to them later. Every few months, it is a good idea to compare things like policy rates and policyholder satisfaction reviews among the companies to see if anything has changed and if a better deal has become available. You may find that you can switch policies and save a few hundred dollars a year on a policy that offers all the coverage you need.

Auto Insurance Claim Challenges: When The Other Driver Is Arrested

I always thought insurance claims for accidents were pretty straightforward until I was rear-ended by a driver who was intoxicated. Since he was arrested for driving under the influence, I had a hard time filing the claim with his insurance company. They couldn't talk to him while he was in jail, so the whole process became much more complex. I realized that there wasn't a lot of information out there about what to expect in these types of situations, so I decided to create this site to help others see what I went through and how the situation was finally resolved. I hope that it helps you if you're ever in an accident like mine and the at-fault driver is difficult to reach.
